Written in the form of an Enduring Historical Legacy this is a true factual account of Edward Moss's early life in Staffordshire, his experiences aboard the Hulks in London and the Woodbridge Convict ship which transported him and his eldest son Edward to Australia in 1839 and his interesting life as a convict in Australia. By 1838 Edward Moss had left the land to seek higher paid employment on the canals but it all did not go to plan. He was the wrong person to be entrusted to deliver a canal narrowboat loaded with 65 casks of Bass Brewery ale to Preston Brook docks in Cheshire. His actions that fatal day set in motion a catastrophic chain of events which would cause the downfall of his family and part them forever. By the time the Moss family had returned home to Alrewas village the growing storm of gossip and recriminations against them had already gathered pace at an alarming rate. It was fuelled by the newspaper articles about the trial and the sudden disruptive appearance of the three prosecution witnesses Hill, Holmes ad Hackett back in the village who were still smarting from the threats of violence they had received from the Moss family during the trial. Outcasts in their own community and blacklisted by the local canal carriers the Moss family were practically destitute and forced to leave Alrewas village to towns or cities where they hoped that the crime committed by Edward Moss was not known.
